Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is our ongoing response to the changing needs of the Capital Regionís elderly.

In 1940, leaders in the Capital Region Jewish community saw that the Depression had left many older Jewish men and women without means or family to ensure their care and safety. The mission was clear: create a haven for our elders.

Our History

A group of dedicated women began approaching their neighbors for contributions, and in 1942, The Hebrew Home for the Aged welcomed 19 men and women. Seven years later, Joseph Goodman spearheaded the successful effort to build a dedicated Nursing Center on land in Troy, donated by his family. Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center moved to Troy in 1973.

The need continued to grow, and our community continued to respond. We have been here long enough to have served many of those who first raised the funds to open our first home.

Still Growing

Today, still growing to meet the needs of the regionís elderly and their families, Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center anchors a Senior Community sitting on 40 gently sloping, wooded acres, offering a multi-level continuum of care informed by traditional Jewish values and award-winning attention to best clinical practices and resident safety.

With its 210 private rooms and large common spaces, the Nursing Center has undergone facility-wide renovations, transforming it into a more home-like setting with expanded opportunities for socialization, dignity, and a more efficient delivery of services.

It is the only kosher skilled nursing facility in a 130-mile radius, and serves the regionís elderly with skilled nursing care, medical adult day services, short-term rehabilitation services, respite care, the Golub Family Memory Enhancement Center for individuals with Alzheimerís disease and other dementia, and Hospice at Daughters of Sarah.

The Massry Residence opened in 2002 with award-winning design featuring the regionís most spacious assisted living apartments, and kosher kitchens. Easy access between The Massry and the Nursing Center facilitates an easy transition if a residentís level of care changes, and visits for family members as well as among residents between the two facilities. A growing number of families have found this arrangement very convenient when one parent has needed the services of the Nursing Center while the other was able to maintain an apartment at The Massry Residence.

Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is a tribute to its founders and those visionaries who have contributed to its growth during the past six decades.

Mission Statment

The Mission of Daughters of Sarah Senior Community is to enhance the quality of life, assure the safety and dignity, and foster the independence of those we serve through residential, personal care, health, and other services, consistent with Jewish values and traditions.
